Commercial buildings we take on across the Roanoke Valley.

Four categories cover most of what we build. Inside each one, the job is either ground-up new construction, a tenant build-out in an existing shell, a commercial renovation, or a conversion to a new use.

We also take on custom homes and large remodels and additions.

  • Moss wall and glass conference room in a Roanoke County law office

    Professional and financial office build-outs

Law, accounting, insurance and real estate offices, bank and credit union branches, reception and conference space, from a fit-out inside an existing shell to adaptive reuse of a whole building.

  • Medical waiting room with guest seating, framed artwork and daylight through a storefront window

    Medical and dental office construction

We build practices, clinics and outpatient suites: exam and treatment rooms, dental operatories, waiting rooms and sterilization, with the mechanical and electrical work behind the walls planned first.

  • Vaulted community room with recessed lighting, a serving kitchenette and glazed double doors onto a lawn

Early learning and child care centers

Child care carries its own rulebook: classrooms, activity rooms, kitchenettes, child-sized restrooms and secure entry, built for centers, preschools, daycares and after-school programs to pass state licensing.

  • Pre-school clubhouse at Parkway Church on the Mountain in Roanoke, with a low timber stage, a reclaimed wood feature wall and an exposed ceiling carrying track lighting

    Churches and community buildings

A congregation keeps using the building while we work, so we phase sanctuaries, fellowship halls, education wings, nurseries, commercial kitchens and nonprofit or civic halls around what stays open.

How we run a commercial construction project, phase by phase.

Pre-construction and budgeting come first. Then permits, inspections against the Virginia building code, and trade partners working to a construction schedule you have already agreed.

  1. We meet, and we listen.

Tell us what you are building, where, and when you need to be in it. We learn your goals, your vision and your budget before anyone talks about a number.

  2. Pre-construction.

Drawings developed and reviewed, selections discussed, the site walked, and a detailed estimate built to the client's vision, goals and budget.

  3. Contract and permits.

Scope of work, final selections, budget, and a schedule of construction are finalized. Contract is signed, deposits received, permits submitted.

  4. Construction.

Your job is run by our team with regular site visits and project updates, inspections, on-site meetings from start to finish.

  5. Close-out.

We walk the building with you, complete punch items, and hand over what you need to run and maintain what we built.

Why building owners hire JF Construction Group as their commercial general contractor.

We show you the estimate and the assumptions behind it.

You can question a line, ask what sits behind it, and take the estimate to your board or your bank as it stands. We put scope, budget and schedule in writing before we break ground, and costs and decisions stay open to you from there.

We keep a personal touch on every commercial project.

Yours is priced and run by a small team, and managed by a JF Construction Group employee. You get professionalism, constant communication and a personal relationship on every job, and a tenant build-out gets the same attention as a ground-up building.

Four generations of Fralin builders in the Roanoke Valley.

JH Fralin and Son started building here in 1931 and spent more than seventy years on churches, schools, hospitals, university buildings and nursing homes across Virginia. Northside, Cave Spring and Lord Botetourt High School are theirs. Jonathan Fralin founded JF Construction Group in 2019.

What our commercial clients say.

We recently worked with Jonathan and JF Construction Group and couldn't be happier with the entire experience. They kept us informed at every single stage of the project, promptly answered all of our questions, and were always transparent about timelines, costs and expectations. The final result is not only stunning and built to last, but the attention to detail is evident in every corner.

Commercial construction questions building owners ask us.

What kinds of commercial buildings does JF Construction Group build?

Professional and financial offices, medical and dental practices, early learning and child care centers, and churches and community buildings. We do ground-up new construction, tenant build-outs, commercial renovation, and adaptive reuse. Recent work includes New River Dermatology, The Academy, Honeytree After School Learning Center, and a former bank in Roanoke County converted into a law office.

Where do you build, and will you come to my site?

Roanoke, Salem and Smith Mountain Lake in the Roanoke Valley, then out to Blacksburg, Lynchburg and Staunton. We walk the site before we price the work, so yes, we come to you. If your project sits outside that corridor, call and ask anyway, because the answer depends on the job rather than the distance.

Are you licensed and bonded, and what should I check before hiring any commercial contractor?

Yes. We hold Virginia Class A Contractor #2705172141, Responsible Land Disturber certification RLD #32392 from the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, and we are bonded and insured with coverage set to each contract. Ask any contractor for the class and number on their license, look it up on the state's public register, and ask for current bond and insurance certificates before you sign.

How do you price a project, and when will I see a real number?

A project's success depends on a methodical planning process, so a real number comes after we understand the job, not on the first call. We start with your goals, your vision and your budget, review the drawings, walk the site, and price the work with the trade partners who will do it. What comes back is a detailed estimate with the assumptions we priced against written down beside it.

Who runs my job day to day, and do you handle permits and inspections?

Your project is priced and run by a small team and managed by a JF Construction Group employee, with regular site visits while the work is going on. We apply for permits during the contract phase. Your locality reviews the drawings, issues the permit and inspects each stage, and we plan those inspections into the schedule. Costs and decisions stay open to you throughout.

Who have you built for, and can I see the work?

New River Dermatology in Roanoke City, The Academy in Roanoke City, and Honeytree After School Learning Center in Roanoke. We also converted a former bank in Roanoke County into a law office. That is part of 50,832 square feet of commercial space delivered. The photographs on this page are ours, and more sit on our projects page.
