Salem, Virginia

Seven miles west, and its own independent city rather than a Roanoke suburb. Commercial build-outs, custom homes and renovations across the west end of the valley.

About fifteen minutes west of our office, straight down US 460. We take on new commercial construction and build-outs, custom homes, and substantial remodels and additions, with the scope and the budget priced together and the assumptions written down beside them.

What we build in Salem

Salem is one of the communities we build in across western and central Virginia. If you are building somewhere else in the region, the answer usually depends on the job rather than the distance, so it is worth a call either way.

More about Salem

Salem is an independent city of about twenty-five thousand people, entirely surrounded by Roanoke County but governed separately, with its own council, its own schools and its own building department. That last point matters more than it sounds: a project on one side of the city line and a project on the other go to different offices under different officials, and the two do not always want the same submittals.

Interstate 81 runs along the north edge of the city with exits at 137, 140 and 141, which puts most of Salem within a few minutes of the interstate and makes it a practical base for anything that needs regular truck access. US 11 and US 460 come through together as Main Street and Apperson Drive, and that corridor carries most of the older commercial stock in town.

Roanoke College anchors the middle of the city, a liberal arts college on a campus that has been in Salem since the 1840s, and its presence keeps a steady demand for professional and student-facing space around downtown. The Salem VA Medical Center sits to the north off Colorado Street, one of the largest Veterans Affairs facilities in the state and a significant employer. The Salem Civic Center, the football stadium that hosted the Division III national championship for years, and Carilion Clinic Field at Salem Memorial Ballpark, home of the Salem Red Sox, sit together on the east side and bring the kind of event traffic a small city usually does not see.

Downtown Salem along Main Street has kept its older commercial buildings largely intact, which means much of the work here is renovation and adaptive reuse rather than ground-up construction: taking a building that has been standing since before the war and making it work for a practice, a shop or an office without losing what makes it worth keeping. Lake Spring Park and Longwood Park sit within walking distance of that stretch, and the residential streets around them run to older homes that reward careful remodeling. The city is the 24153.
